WINTER  SPORTS

( Extracted from Le Journal By P.Woltt . Translated from French By S.K.Sengupta . )

“ The snow is good this morning , ” said I to the porter .
“ Tomorrow it will be better , monsieur . ”
A kid questioned me , “ Why monsieur does not go for sleighing ? It”s interesting too , sleighing ….. it’s for the children and the
old . ”
“ Are you sure it’s for the old ? ”
“ Oh yes , monsieur ! Grandpa does it every morning . ”
That reassured me .
“ And how does one take to it ? ”
“ That’s easy , monsieur . One sits on it and it moves all alone . ”
“ A guide is not necessary ? ”
He burst out in laughter , “ Oh no , monsieur ! ”

I was at last going to enjoy the winter sports . I bought a sleigh for me . A mild slope tempted me ….. , however I should have known that after the first turn …….
That delighted me . I installed myself on my sleigh . One was indeed well on this sleigh , but one missed a back .
“ Too bad , let’s go ! ”
Lord ! Help ! I run at 60 per hour . The speed augments . I go
mad ! A shock …..a shower of snow ….. I’m buried !
“ Mumma ! ”
One calls always one’s mother when one is old . I see blood everywhere …..
I feel myself ….. nothing ….. saved !
I abandon my sleigh and return on foot . Two hours of walking . I find the kid before the hotel .
“ Where’s your sleigh , monsieur ? ”
“ I abandoned it . It was going too fast for me . ”
“ Monsieur then did not use his feet ? ”
“ Feet ? ”
“ To apply brakes , monsieur . ”
“ Brakes ? ”
“ But yes , monsieur . One puts on brakes with his feet ! ”
The next day , I was proposed a trip in a bobsleigh . “ This monsieur , this will amuse you . ”

“ No danger , n’est-ce pas ? ”
“ You will be six . The one at the head will hold the steering-wheel , and as you are not trained …..
“ But yes , I am trained ! ”
“ Then you will be put in the tail . ”
Would I advance too much ? No. In the tail , I will fall over the others . I run no risk .
Here we part . It’s magnificent . What serenity , this run in the silence ! A skier wishes to overtake us ….. He falls , bravo ! Henceforth I will do no more but bobsleighing . In number , besides , one is immediately more sure of oneself , more courageous . It seems to me that we are not advancing . “ Don’t worry , within a few seconds we will be at 80 Kmph . ”

At 80 ! I clasp with my two arms the one who is before me . With a blow of the elbow he again throws me behind .
A cry : “ Lean to the right ! ”
“Why ? ” – “A turn … … look out ! ….. brake , the man at the tail ! ” – “With the feet ? ” ….. “ But no , brake with the brake ! ” …..
“ Which brake ? ”
I followed nothing ….. We tumble and what a tumble !
A friend advised me to purchase skates for myself . Skating is fun , he said , and safe !

EMOTIONAL  INTELLIGENCE
By S.K.Sengupta
( GLOBALLY BROADCASTED RADIO TALK : COPYRIGHT RESERVED )

During the freedom struggle of India , Mahatma Gandhi was fondly known as Bapu . Bapu in Hindi means father . One day Bapu was stopped by a tall young police officer as he was on a March . Bapu bent on a walking-stick , adjusted his specks and then looked up at the tall police officer . The police officer fumbled before the great leader and said : “Bapu , you always say that one must do one’s duty . My duty says that I must not allow you to march any further .” Bapu broke into a broad smile . Then he lifted his hand and patting the cheek of the young officer said : “ Yes son , you must do your duty , and I must do my duty .” Saying that Bapu marched ahead . The police officer watched silently overawed by the aura of the spiritual giant .

It is a classic example of Emotional Intelligence . Emotional maturity lies in understanding one’s own emotions and values , understanding the entire situation and the requirements of the concerned people , and then taking the most appropriate and justified action . In the process one also has to handle the feelings of all the people around with gentle care and warmth . In short , E.Q. or Emotional Quotient is a measure of how well you can handle your own emotions as well as the feelings of others .

To practice Emotional Intelligence , we must understand a few concepts . We must understand that human beings are feeling beings . We are chiefly led by emotions and only to a small degree by reason . I will smoothly get along with a person who takes good care of my feelings . If someone makes a good appeal to my emotions , I am likely to do what he asks me to do . When we handle people we must handle them with feelings . For example , a two year old child runs to grab the expensive mobile of his mother . If the mother shouts at him , the child will wail and create a scene . If the mother hugs the child , kisses him , and starts tickling him and rolling over , the child will soon forget the mobile as the new game to him will be far more enjoyable . People are like that . Handle them with feelings .

Next , we must understand our emotions . They come like tsunami from nowhere , and we have no control over them . If we try to stop our emotions we wil not succeed . It will take much longer to subside and it will also play havoc with our entire system . We don’t generate our emotions . They just happen to us . They are necessary and are a way of nature to maintain the well-being of our body , mind and soul . When we don’t hinder our emotions ,  they flow smoothly through our system , play their role and then disappear soon after that .

The next concept we must understand is that all actions jump from emotions , not from reason . Reason can only modify the action . Whenever we have strong emotions we will impulsively feel like doing something . Impulsive acts are usually wrong and unacceptable . So , though we cannot control our emotions , we can and we must stop all our impulsive thoughts , words , and actions . That is the heart and soul of Emotional Intelligence . Though  we cannot control our emotions , we can and we must stop all our impulsive thoughts , words and  actions .  Like , if a friend annoys me and I feel like abusing him and giving him a sound slap , then I must pause and stop myself from taking that impulsive action .

Next , we must understand what is an appropriate action to take in any situation . One must realize that though one must understand one’s own emotions and viewpoint , that is not the only thing which counts . One must also understand the feelings and viewpoint of all the concerned people , one must understand the situation in its entirety , and then take an action which is in the best interest of all the people taken together . Here is a true story . A twenty-seven year old man , Deepak , found a two-year old lost boy . Despite best efforts Deepak could not trace the  parents of the small boy . So he brought-up the child for next eight years and remained unmarried . Then by coincidence , he came to know about the parents of the child who had almost lost every hope of getting their son back . Deepak was in a dilemma whether to disclose the truth to the parents because he did not want to part with the child . Finally , however , Deepak acted in the best interest of everyone and restored the boy to his parents .

So , we need to understand that there are four steps in an emotionally intelligent action . Number one , feel and understand your emotions but don’t try to hinder them . Number two , don’t take any impulsive action . Number three , realize your feelings , feelings of others , understand the whole situation and then decide on an action which is in the best interest of everyone taken together . And lastly number four , while carrying out the decided action be very gentle and pleasant in handling the feelings of everyone .

Next , we have to understand that if we have a high E.Q.  , then we will have more people success and also more material success . Everything that we desire comes from people : the music , the movie , the fancy dresses , the mouth-watering food , the job we want , the business deal we are looking forward to . Life is such that if the people around me like me , then I will prosper . If I mishandle the feelings of people around me , then they will not like to deal with me . People with high I.Q. or Intelligence Quotient can handle tasks very well . But to succeed in life it is far more important to handle people and their feelings effectively . For success in life therefore E.Q. plays a far more important role than I.Q.

There is one more thing that we need to understand . It has been seen that one , who is healthy both physically and mentally , has a higher level of tolerance , patience , and ability to handle situations pleasantly . Therefore to raise our E.Q. we should have good diet , enough rest and sleep , daily exercise and daily meditation . It is said that our body is the temple of our soul . We must maintain it very well . Swami Vivekananda once said : “ Being pleasant always and smiling brings one closer to God , closer than any prayer can .” Emotional Intelligence can give us people success , material success and spiritual success as well . In fact there is no success in life without Emotional success .

HOW TO CONTROL  -  SOME NOTES
By S.K.Sengupta

*   ONE  DOESN’T  FIGHT  FOR  CONTROL  IF HE  CAN  CONTOL .

*   BAD  CONTROL  IS  NO  CONTROL .

*   GOOD  CONTROL  IS  WHEN  YOU  GIVE  THE  OTHER  PERSON  A  CHOICE  ,  AND  HE  WILLINGLY  AGREES  TO  PLAY  THE  GAME  ,  WILLINGLY  AGREES  TO  BE  CONTROLLED  .

*   YOU  PUT  A  PERSON  UNDER  CONTROL  SO  A  PERSON  CAN  CONTROL  .

*   WHEN  YOU  COMMAND  ,  COMMAND  WITH  INTENTION  AND  AFFINITY  .  APPLY  APPROPRIATE  FORCE  ,  NEITHER  LESS  NOR  MORE  ,  TO  ENSURE  COMPLIANCE  .  DON’T  LOSE  CONTROL  ON  YOUR  OWN  INTENTION  AND  AFFINITY .
*  Control one thing at a time and understand the principle that makes it work .

*  Now handle similar and related things using the same stable principle .

*  When coaching someone , teach one data or principle first . Let the student understand and master it thoroughly . Thereafter , the student will be able to understand and master all similar and related matter with ease .

*  Bad control is uncertain , variable and unpredictable . It is non-positive and sloppy .

INSTANT   EXPERTISE

( In vein of light humour )

A new TIC ( Tongue in Cheek ) Aid for preparing speeches and briefings etc. The invention known as a buzz-phrase generator gives its prime practitioners what amounts to instant expertise on matters pertaining to the Company .

The buzz-phrase generator consists of three columns of buzzwords numbered zero to nine .

Column – 1

Column – 2
Column - 3
0.Integrated
0.Management
0.Options

1.Total
1.Organizational
1.Flexibility

2.Systematized
2.Monitored
2.Capability

3.Parallel
3.Reciprocal
3.Mobility

4.Functional
4.Digital
4.Programming

5.Responsive
5.Logistical
5.Concept

6.Optional
6.Transitional
6.Time-phase

7.Synchronized
7.Incremental
7.Projection

8.Compatible
8.Third generation
8.Hardware

9.Balanced
9.Policy
9.Contingency

The procedure is simple . Think of any three-digit number at random . Then select the corresponding buzzword from each column . Put them together and WHAM ! POW ! ZAP ! You sound just like you know what you’re talking about .

Take for instance the number 257 . Take word two from column 1 , word five from column 2 , and word seven from column 3 . You now have             “ systematized logistical projection”. You don’t know what it means ; but don’t worry , neither do “they” .

Would you prefer “balanced incremental flexibility” , or maybe “integrated transitional contingency”. How about “functional third-generation hardware” and “optional management mobility” . Now that ought to do the trick .

The important thing is that the buzzphrases generator provides the user with the perfect aid for preparing anything on any subject . Automatically you have one thousand different combinations , all of which will give you that proper ring of decisive , progressive , knowledgable authority .

The applications of the buzzphrase generator are literally limitless . Take it home with you and roll off a little “responsive monitored time-phrase” or “compatible organizational capability” into a conversation with wife and kids . It will not only drive them to distraction , but for the first time you’ll enjoy equal standing in the discussion .

At any rate , once you’ve mastered the art of the ringing declaraton and become a connoisseur of convoluted phraseology , no one will ever take exception to your rationale .

With thus broadened etymological horizons , your programmes are assured . No one will have the remotest idea of what you’re talking about , and they’re not about to admit it .

TIME MANAGEMENT DIARY

[The author ,Shri S.K.Sengupta , is a Management Consultant , Behavioural Scientist and Personal Counsellor . ]

I love to sit back , relax and feel that everything is under my control . I hate to feel breathless , overburdened and short of time . I am glad when a small sheet spread before me in the morning tells me  :
  • all that I need to do today ; and
  • in order of priority how I should do those things one after another .

That way I feel :
·        I am in charge . Things are under my grip .
·        I am using my time intelligently .
·        I have a sense of accomplishment at the end of the day .

It is a great feeling . I love it . And all that I need to do for that is to maintain a simple diary .

I am a conscientious note-taker and I buy a New Year Diary much before the current year is out . If I get a bill which I want to pay on say 14th January , I will open the 14th January page of my New Diary and make a note . I have to meet someone on 27th December , I will open the 27th December page of my running old Diary and note the appointment . I have to receive my brother at the airport on 21st January , I open the 21st January page of my New Diary and scribble that I have to be at the airport at 6.30 A.M. And I am happy . I am relaxed . I can’t forget . I am free from the tension that I must not forget . And if today is 23rd December , when I open the 23rd December page of my running Diary in the morning , the notings at the top of the page tell me everything that I need to do today . Easy . What a simple way to be free from stress . I can certainly lean back and feel happy .

So , today is say 23rd December and my Diary tells me all that I have to do today . I find that I can’t do one of the tasks noted for today , and I don’t want to do one more task , and both can be postponed to suitable dates : say to 26th December and 3rd January . So I delete these two items from the page today and jot them down suitably on the 26th December and 3rd January pages . Now maybe I am left with six tasks for today . Now I add one routine task to this list , and one more task that I feel I need to do . Finally , therefore , I have eight tasks for today . I jot these eight tasks in the middle of the Diary page , one below the other , and delete them from the top . Now if three of these tasks are TOP URGENT , I mark ‘A’ against them . Out of remaining five also , two must be completed today . I mark ‘B’ against them . Remaining three items are less important , which also I would like to do today if time permits . I mark ‘C’ against them . Now , I go to items marked A , and number them as A1 , A2 and A3 in order of priority . Then I go to items marked B , and number them B1and B2 in order of the importance and sequence in which I would like to do them . Next I go to items marked C , and number them C1, C2 and C3 in a similar manner . So my Diary page looks something like this :
Meet Mr. F.D’Souza at 9 A.M.                           >       A1
Meeting with Citibank B.M. at 10.30 A.M.        >       A2
Final touches to Project Report                           >        C1
Preparation for the talk tomorrow                       >        B1
Receiving Sunil at Rly. Station at 4 P.M.            >        A3
Internet downloading on Team Building             >        C3
Attending get-together at the club at 6 P.M.        >        C2
Completing the article on Time Management      >        B2

Now , I begin my day attending to task A1 . After that is over , I delete it by drawing a line across it . Then I move on to task A2 , complete it , and then delete it . Now task A3 can be done only in the evening . So , I move on to the next priority item i.e. B1 . After being over with B1 , I delete it . It is still not time for A3 which is the highest priority task on the list now . So , I move on to B2 , complete and delete that . It is still not time for A3 . So , I complete C1 and delete that . Now , I attend to A3 . After A3 is over , I delete that too . Now , I attend to C2 , and it also happens to be the right time in the evening to go ahead for the   ‘get-together ‘ . When I delete C2 , I am left with C3 for which I did not have time today . So I check-up my Diary to see on which of the next few days I am relatively free . I find that on 26th December I am not much occupied . So , now I delete C3 from the Diary Page today and carry it over to the 26th December Page of my Diary . A well-utilized yet uncluttered day ! I had no stress , I accomplished as much as one could , I worked on priority basis , and I wasted no time . Am I not Happy ?!

Time Management Diary is a simple concept as illustrated below :

----- Note what is to be done on which day .

-----Divide today’s work in three categories [A,B&C]
TIME                                         in order of priority .

----- Prioritize work in each category and mark them
MANAGEMENT                       accordingly [A1,A2,A3 etc.] .

-----Do the work in order of priority as planned .
DIARY
-----Carry over any work left undone to some
                                                  suitable future date .

Time Management Diary system is not only easy to understand and follow , it is also highly useful :
·        It ensures that nothing is forgotten or left undone .
·        It ensures that one is free from unnecessary mental clutter and mental stress .
·        It tells you in a flash what needs to be done today .
·        It tells you in a flash the priority of things to be done .
·        It ensures that First Things are done First .
·        It ensures best utilization of available time .
·        It gives you a sense of control and accomplishment .

“Trap the time and set yourself free “ . That is what Time Management Diary is all about.

The  Magic  of  Our  Subconscious  Mind

By  S.K.Sengupta , Director , Dare to Win

Want to possess the Magic-lamp of Aladin ? It’s in your pocket , just learn to use it . Moonshine ? ! No . The genie dwells in your subconscious mind .

Yeah , like the Magic-lamp of Aladin , our subconscious mind can bring to life whatever we want . It doesn’t judge . Demand smiles , health , car and bungalow , and it will lift and carry us to that . What happens if we opt for tears , disease , and poverty ? That is what will land on us . Subconscious mind determines our destiny !

If our destiny is determined by our subconscious mind , and if we can ask it to produce whatever we want , then all of us should be blooming in joy .  Yes . But , unfortunately , many of us do not know how to awake and instruct this powerful genie . The method is simple . It takes time and continuous repetition in conscious mind before any message can enter the subconscious mind and begin to influence it . More the repetition , deeper the influence . More vividly we visualize what we want , more we whip up our passion for it , faster will be the response that will arise from this sleeping giant within us .

If we have understood the foregoing , we will also realize how we consciously or unconsciously use or misuse this towering power with which God has blessed us . Are you always smiling , believe that ‘ golden days are here again ’ , and mix with happy people ? Your continuous thoughts of cheer will reach your subconscious mind . It will hear you asking : “ I want happiness ” , and it will produce further joy in abundance . The principle also works in the reverse gear . Cherish tearful thoughts for some time ; soon subconscious mind will catch on , and you will be wallowing in misery .

Our subconscious mind will manifest in our lives our own predominant thoughts . Take a minute . Why don’t you read this sentence once again ? Pocket this principle securely and utilize it to have a sunny and meaningful life . You can do more . Have you heard of Dynamic Meditation , Creative Visualization , Neuro-linguistic Programming , Autosuggestion and Self-hypnosis ? These are dynamic modern methods of powerfully influencing our own subconscious mind with our own thoughts . To begin with , this easy system may be observed . Close your eyes . Visualize vividly that you are receiving what you want , in colour , in three dimension , and feel the joy and buoyant emotions . Pack it with passion . Repeat this exercise again and again , day and night , with belief that you will soon have whatever you  want . Back it up with goal-oriented physical action . And refuse to throw up your cards ! That is all that goes to make fairy-tale success-stories .

May I repeat what I said in the beginning ? The Magic-lamp of Aladin is not just a fable . All of us are Aladin , we all have our genie , and everyone of us can create his own magic . The magic of our own subconscious mind !
